That’s not to say you won’t want to linger here—the plants and streaming natural light make it a comfy atmosphere for a slow start, too. Owner-baker Naomi Shim’s creative, seasonal pastries and desserts go great with Doubting Thomas’s killer lineup of pour-over coffees and specialty lattes. The casual but thoughtful—and locally sourced—menu of granola bowls, breakfast sandwiches and toasts should do the trick, and they’re all at the forefront of L.A.’s already-advanced café fare. This longstanding bakery and café isn’t just a cornerstone of the community—it’s one of the best Cuban restaurants in the city. Run by the Concordia family, who’ve been mastering the art of BBQ for generations, the Park’s Finest spices up traditional American cuts with Filipino flavor, weaving coconut into BBQ sauce and 16-hour–smoked round top into a luscious adobo-like curry. Where to Eat and Drink in LA’s Historic Filipinotown

If you’re looking for an outdoor escape that’s only about a 30-minute drive away, then this rustic haven might be the perfect place. More often than not, al fresco patios tend to involve more views of the sidewalk with the odd plant to break up the tarmac. So to have the opportunity to live out your childhood dreams of hanging out in a “treehouse” all day, enjoying the crisp air and soaking up the sun, is the kind of novelty we’d like to see more of. Then for chilly evenings, you could warm yourself up with the lentil soup, vindalu or saag for a vegan, vegetarian or gluten-free option. For chef Justin Foronda, who grew up in the neighborhood and opened his first restaurant HiFi Kitchen in 2019, it seemed obvious to highlight the influence of these surrounding neighborhoods on his uniquely Filipino Angeleno menu. “Living in such a diverse area, where different communities live so close together, it was natural for me to notice the intersection of ingredients and flavors between these cuisines,” Foronda shares. A colorful, enchanting experience awaits at Tree House Tavern in Rhode Island, a unique restaurant that’s sure to win your heart at first sight and at first bite.

I believe that’s the term for crispy pork in a certain area of the Philippines. You always want to order what a restaurant is named after,” says Foronda. During the ‘60s through the ‘80s, Filipinos began migrating away from the area to the suburbs, resulting in demographic changes and a lack of community and political support for the increased visibility of this epicenter of Filipino culture. This “invisibility,” as compared to other enclaves like Chinatown and Little Tokyo, resulted in the neighborhood being overlooked for housing and government social services, leading to a rise in crime and poverty. There’s no better way to enjoy this change of season than at this gorgeous cafe nestled amongst the trees in Topanga Canyon. We’ve picked out our favorite spots all across the neighborhood, including alleyways full of street art, a tour in a colorful jeep and a stop at one of the best bars in L.A. Foronda also makes it a point to pay it forward to the community that’s provided so much of his culinary inspiration. He sources his pandesal—Filipino dinner rolls—from local Filipino bakery My Mom’s Bakeshop.

We will make adjustments to suit individual tastes, but please order conservatively. This Filipino bakery also serves traditional favorites like sisig, chicken adobo, and pancit, plus all of the desserts you’d expect, like leche flan and bibingka. The designation as Historic Filipinotown brought pride to the local Filipino community along with much-needed visibility. Subsequently, a number of Filipino Americans were delegated to city commissions, which led to the Filipinos for Garcetti campaign and several community members graduating to Garcetti’s administration.

It was one of the few places in the city where they were able to buy homes, and being surrounded by neighbors who shared their culture and language helped shield them from racism. In 1950, the Filipino Christian Church—a major touchstone of the early Filipino American community in Los Angeles—moved into the Temple-Beverly area after acquiring the Union Avenue M.E. Church building. Blume & Plume is admirably, gorgeously, fantastically colorful in every way.

With artwork displayed across all disciplines—photography, street, design, collage and fine art—this contemporary gallery is a cultural haven that maintains eclectic cool while appealing to many.

During October for Filipino American Heritage Month, he’s hosted weekly events with panel discussions, vendors, and food, dubbed “Historic Illipinos” that celebrates the impact of Filipinos on breakdancing culture. Foronda started breakdancing in elementary school, and one event screened Radiotron’s Renegades vs. Style Elements—an influential HiFi breakin’ battle in 1996 between two Filipino-led b-boy crews. Before the neighborhood earned its official designation as Historic Filipinotown in 2002, Filipino immigrants began purchasing homes in the area in the 1940s.

Frito-Lay Announces First 100% All-Electric Vehicle Site

frito-lay charlotte north carolina

By the mid-1990s, as the snack food sector entered a slower growth period marked by heavy price competition, it became increasingly clear that Frito-Lay would remain the industry front-runner by a wide margin. The company increased its share of the salty snack market in the United States from 38 percent in the late 1980s to 55 percent by 1996. Competitive pressure from Frito-Lay led two of its fiercest rivals to wave the white flag. Borden sold most of its snack businesses in the mid-1990s as part of a massive restructuring.

Advertising

Covering Venezuela, Chile, Colombia, Ecuador, Guatemala, Honduras, Panama, Peru, and El Salvador, the joint venture was designed to enable Frito-Lay to better penetrate the $3 billion salty snack sector in Latin America. Made with a fake fat called olestra developed by Procter & Gamble (ironically the maker of rival chip Pringles), the Wow! Products were controversial because of reports and studies that indicated that the chips could cause gastric distress.

Division of PepsiCo, Inc.

The 1960s was an era of consolidation, with a number of food and beverage firms being gobbled up by larger entities. Pepsi-Cola was considered a takeover target not only because it ran a distant second in the soft drink sector to industry giant Coca-Cola Company, but also because little of the company's stock was in the hands of management. Following the creation of PepsiCo, however, the new company's directors held a much larger proportion of shares, with Lay holding a 2.5 percent stake himself. A second force behind the merger was Frito-Lay's desire to more aggressively pursue overseas markets. The company's sales had largely been restricted to the United States and Canada, but it could now take advantage of Pepsi's strong international operations, through which Pepsi products were sold in 108 countries. Later that year, Lay borrowed $100 to take over Barrett's small warehouse in Nashville on a distributorship basis.

Frito-Lay thus created the thinner, crispier Tostitos, which could be eaten alone, made into nachos, or dipped into increasingly popular salsas. By 1985 Tostitos was Frito-Lay's number five brand, with sales of about $200 million, trailing only Doritos ($500 million), Lay's ($400 million), Fritos ($325 million), and Ruffles ($250 million). Also in 1985 Frito-Lay expanded its tortilla chip line with the introduction of Santitas white and yellow corn round chips. By 1954 the Frito Company business included 11 plants and 12 franchise operations.

In 1946 another franchise was launched in Bethesda, Maryland, followed by a Hawaii-based franchise in 1947. The following year, Frito introduced Chee-tos brand Cheese Flavored Snacks, which gained immediate popularity. Meantime, the Fritos brand went national in 1949 when Doolin purchased color advertisements in several magazines, including Ladies' Home Journal, Better Homes and Gardens, and Life. Impressed with his five-cent snack, Doolin discovered that the manufacturer wished to return to Mexico and would sell his business for $100. Doolin borrowed the money from his mother, purchasing the recipe, 19 retail accounts, and production equipment consisting of an old, handheld potato ricer.

In 1963 Frito-Lay began using the slogan "Betcha Can't Eat Just One" in its advertising for Lay's potato chips. Two years later comedian Bert Lahr began appearing in ads in which he attempted--always unsuccessfully--to eat just one Lay's chip. Annual revenues for Frito-Lay exceeded $180 million by 1965, when the company had more than 8,000 employees and 46 manufacturing plants. Lay and the Frito Company merged to form Frito-Lay, Inc., a snack food giant headquartered in Dallas with revenues exceeding $127 million. The new company began with four main brands--Fritos, Lay's, Ruffles, and Chee-tos--and a national distribution system.

Frito-Lay Announces First 100% All-Electric Vehicle Site

In 1953 the Frito Kid made his debut as a company spokesman; the character continued to be used in Fritos advertising until 1967. In 1956 the Frito Kid made an appearance on the "Today" show with host Dave Garroway, marking the Frito Company's first use of television advertising. Fritos gained a new advertising theme in 1958 with the debut of "Munch a Bunch of Fritos." That year, the Frito Company acquired the rights to Ruffles brand potato chips. The following year, Doolin died, having led his company to its status as a major snack food maker, with revenues exceeding $51 million.

As Kendall succinctly related to Forbes in 1968, "Potato chips make you thirsty; Pepsi satisfies thirst." The plan was to jointly market PepsiCo's snacks and soft drinks, thereby giving Pepsi a potential advantage in its ongoing battle with Coke. Unfortunately, these plans were eventually scuttled by the resolution of a Federal Trade Commission antitrust suit brought against Frito-Lay in 1963. The FTC ruled in late 1968 that PepsiCo could not create tie-ins between Frito-Lay and Pepsi-Cola products in most of its advertising. PepsiCo was also barred from acquiring any snack or soft drink maker for a period of ten years.

Williamson served as the first chairman and CEO of Frito-Lay, with Lay taking the position of president. In 1962 Lay took over as CEO, with Fladger F. Tannery becoming president; two years later, Lay added the chairmanship to his duties. In the midst of the Great Depression, the lack of job prospects spurred a number of young people to turn to entrepreneurship in order to get ahead. Among these were the founders of the two companies that would merge in 1961 to form Frito-Lay.

With the domestic market so firmly in its control, Frito-Lay was sure to look increasingly overseas for growth opportunities, particularly because there was no other global competitor in the industry. In the early 21st century, the company was likely to continue its expansion of its main brands--especially Lay's, Ruffles, Chee-tos, and Doritos--into new markets and to seek additional acquisitions and joint ventures in order to add more brands to its non-U.S. Portfolio, which featured Walker's in the United Kingdom and Sabritas in Mexico. Entering the 1990s, Frito-Lay faced continuing challenges from both regional and national players, including the upstart Eagle Snacks brand, owned by beer powerhouse Anheuser-Busch Cos. Eagle Snacks gained market share in the 1980s with premium products that sold for low prices, some of which were 20 percent lower than those of Frito-Lay. In addition to the increased competition, Frito-Lay also suffered in the late 1980s through 1990 from self-inflicted wounds, such as increasing prices faster than inflation, letting the corporate payroll become bloated, and allowing product quality to decline.

In 1932 the Texas native was running an ice cream business which was struggling because of a price war. Doolin began seeking a new venture and happened to buy a five-cent, plain package of corn chips while eating at a San Antonio café. At the time, corn chips or "fritos" (the word frito means fried in Spanish) were a common fried corn meal snack in the Southwest. Typically, cooks would cut flattened corn dough into ribbons, then season and fry them.

Lay gained from the Frito Company an exclusive franchise to manufacture and distribute Fritos corn chips in the Southeast. In 1983 Calloway shifted to the PepsiCo headquarters in Purchase, New York, to become the parent company's CFO (and eventually its chairman and CEO). Taking over as president of Frito-Lay was Michael Jordan, who held the position for two years before also heading to Purchase and eventually becoming PepsiCo president.

Plaza Midwood: Charlotte, NC Hours + Location Detroit Style Pizza and Burgers across the US

emmys squared charlotte

We ordered two pizzas which were served promptly. The quality of the ingredients was outstanding. The pizza was not greasy and I was pleasantly surprised by the gluten free crust which, to my taste buds, tasted as good and even better than something containing gluten. Having a brother with Celiac, this last part is an absolute plus for me and a reason to keep coming back. First time here, actually suggested by my friend.

Emmy Squared Pizza

Emmy loves to bring friends and family together! We make it easy to come to you for that special occasion, event or meeting through online ordering for larger groups.

Cult-Favorite Emmy Squared Pizza Opens in Charlotte Today

Pizza was superb we had the La Mexicana which had awesome flavor. Our server was very attentive and friendly. What started as a pizza hotspot in the Williamsburg, Emmy Squared has rapidly expanded recently with the latest target in the Plaza Midwood neighborhood in Charlotte. The restaurant is widely known for its thick crust pizza and its double-stacked burger on a pretzel bun, which has won multiple best-of awards.

My sister is gluten free so we ordered all of the pizza with gluten free dough. I was hesitant in doing so since the dough is the best part (a more airy Sicilian style) and I was nervous that it might not be the same. But I was pleasantly surprised that the gluten free pizza was just as good- I probably wouldnt have even noticed the difference.

We made a reservation for Thursday, thus didn't have to wait for a seat! I love how spacious this place is, parking was a difficulty but overall i was able to find a spot a street over. I usually don't eat pizza that often Bc school events always provide pizza so I got tired of it very quickly. But this pizza really hit me, I absolutely loved it. Honey on pizza was really amazing. Also this Detroit style pizza was way better than the regular Style pizza and I want to say even better than Chicago deep dish.

If the chiles are too much heat, you can take as much of them off as you want as they are placed on top of the basil leaf. The pizza was cooked perfectly and the crust was amazing. Andy, our waiter was great, and all the other staff were just as friendly. If you haven't had their pizza definitely recommend you give them a try.

We had the Zia style waffle fries which have pimento cheese, bacon and ranch dressing and we had the Angel pie with Ricotta and mushrooms. The fries were really good, they were very crispy and the sauce was delicious and the pizza was great. I thought the crust was almost perfect and the toppings went really well together. I genuinely cannot say enough good things about Emmy Squared. The pizza is absolutely incredible. After having raved about it to my family when they were visiting from NY, I took them to try it out for themselves.

Emmy Squared Pizza offers Detroit style pizza marked by its square shape, crispy bottom, fluffy dough, cheesy "frico" crust, and signature sauce stripes. We combined a New York style grandma pie with a Detroit style pizza and then added a dose of culinary creativity with our fluffy focaccia-like dough, edged with a caramelized, crispy cheese known as frico crust. Was surprised never thought it be so big space. Amazing place for a pizza and salad beside drinks. Must must try for anyone who loves a good salad n pizza. The host were friendly and polite, so was the chef who came out to meet us.In all amazing 5/5 experience. I just moved from New York City and have been to a few of their locations there.

There is street parking just outside the restaurant and down the street. Alternatively there is a garage but not sure if the restaurant validates parking or how much it costs. The food tasted great and was delivered promptly after ordering. This pizza is a great blend of creamy (burratta) and spicy (not overly spicey but there's a kick).

3 for averaging for drinks and service.Food is really surprisingly below standards.Have been to other branch in town for emmy squared pizza and food was amazing. The experience has been opposite. The salad is to be caesars salad.. And it came as whole leaf of cabbage with prepared sauce on it.I can understand chef wanted to do different deconstructed presentation. But who wants to cut and mix salad off a plate. It was overall worst salad i have ever had.Pizza toppings were good, however the crust had already sagged in and was soggy at best.I love emmy squared pizza but frankly not this branch. We walked in and our toddler was immediately offered a dinosaur toy and crayons to draw with.

A forecast led by interior designers with a pulse on trends that will be shaping the upcoming year, and beyond. Often overlooked they can be useful for storage or for deep bedside tables, but we love when interior designers have fun with them, such as in this bedroom by interior designer Martin Brudnizki. 'One of my favorite home decor ideas is accessorizing a room with flowers. Bringing a sense of the outdoors inside can make a space feel more calming and tranquil.

Work soft furnishings into kitchens

It’s especially ideal for a waterfront property or beach cottage like this Florida home by designer Ashley Gilbreath as it plays into the coastal environment. Out back, cottagecore lovers embrace whimsical plants grounded in traditional British-garden style. "Stick to old-fashioned, nostalgic throwbacks," says Country Living's Senior Food & Garden Editor Chris Michel.

As an exterior paint color, it’s sleek and hides any dirt or debris buildup. For the Wyoming home of Emily Janak, the designer chose a black protective coating to update the previously mint green and white one. By evaluating paint colors at different times of day, you’ll get a better sense of whether or not you’ll like them in the long run. Even a little cloud cover can completely change how a color looks, turning it from a nice sage green to more of a '70s avocado.

Artfully Conceal With Room Screens

Any house or apartment, whether a new build or a historic property, comes with its own sets of quirks. The trick is to see these details as opportunities rather than road blocks. Once you’ve done that, the whole world is your decorative oyster. We combed through both new and old projects from the pages of ELLE DECOR to bring you 60 practical and fun ideas to make your dream home from whatever you have.

Arrange your photo prints in the shape of a heart and glue them to a canvas. Wrap twine around old bottles for a simple, rustic touch for any room. Find bottles at your local thrift store or save empty wine bottles at home. These are perfect for holding little florals or as standalone decor. Using wire, restring the frame so you can hang your favorite prints every month.

Apply alcohol to wipe any dust and debris from the candlesticks, then use paint markers or acrylic paint to add floral designs of your choosing. If your ceilings are on the low side, paint them white to make the room feel less claustrophobic. Hang curtains higher than the windows, suggests Allen-Brett, to trick your eye into thinking the room is taller.

Giving your door a new coat of paint or some fresh hardware could be all you need to dress up your space. Whether you’re looking for rustic home goods or DIY ideas for your bathroom, you’ll find plenty of inspiration in our 41 DIY home decor ideas. Our collection includes photos and tips so you can get started on exciting projects today. Make something new for your home with these easy DIY home decor ideas. Whether you're looking for a modern, rustic, or farmhouse style project, you'll find it here. A lot of these ideas can be done in many different areas of the home, making it easy to find something that will fit into yours.

Wake up a white kitchen with a bright nook, as done by Hilary Matt Interiors. Repurposing furniture is a going to be big in the new year, that’s why tackling a stained couch cushion with complementary fabric for a nuanced two-tone look is the way to go. “A really rich plaid paired with a mohair, velvet, or leather would look great,” notes Libby Rawes of Sharp & Grey Interiors in Philadelphia. Wall mural ideas are back with a bang, and the designs that are seeing the most traction are those that depict natural scenes.

Offsetting your books with artwork creates contrast and adds more personality. Wall decor is a finishing touch that can add life and character to every room in the house. Well chosen wall art and decor can complement the existing style of your interiors or add a striking contrast that changes the entire feel of the room. The things that you put on your walls should capture your imagination, start a conversation, transport you to another world, or remind you of what you find beautiful, funny, or life-affirming. Vintage Schumacher wallpaper in the bedroom of fiber artist Trish Andersen makes the space feel like you’re inside of a gift box in the best way.

You could fill it with books—or you could add in decor accents and accessories like vases and sculptures to break up the monotony of a wall of books. Not only will it feel more cohesive, but if you've got a lot of bright colors in your collection, they'll stand out even more. This 700-square-foot apartment in Italy already featured great bones and plenty of light—it just needed some spatial differentiation. Here architect and furniture designer Alessandro Preda designed a sheet-rock partition to conceal the bed.

Nobody puts baby in a corner...except when baby is a custom blue velvet sofa. In designer Charlie Ferrer’s Manhattan studio apartment, a curved sofa tucks conveniently into a nook in the small living room while a cocktail table, in turn, nests into the sofa. This space-saving layout allows for unencumbered views of the charing fireplace. Shelving that traces the perimeter of the room, meanwhile, draws the eye upward while allowing Ferrer to display his collections. A soft white paint with gray undertones paired with white accents makes an excellent alternative to an allover white exterior. To display consider innovating approaches to hanging art, such as installing a picture rail or layering a cluster of vintage frames on top of one another.

If you’re not a fan of maximalism, consider using bold wallpaper in a smaller space, like a powder room. Since the space is so small, your wallpaper is unlikely to feel loud or overwhelming. Plus, it’s a surefire way to turn your powder room into a show-stopper. For easy DIY decor, print out favorite prints from the year and arrange them in a giant heart on your wall. Even better, swap out photos year after year to keep the decor feeling fresh. Turn a blank canvas into modern wall art with a brightly colored geometric pattern.

Designer Joe Lucas shows us how it’s done in his sunny Los Angeles home. The classic chair rail is sometimes thought traditional, but in Julie Polidoro’s Roman abode, it reads as starkly contemporary. West Elm Inspired Painted Rug

This is a scenario when it really pays to take your time and be hands-on. You’ll be living with these colors for the next decade, if you’re lucky, so try not to let anything (your contractor’s schedule included) rush your decision. From weathered antiques to happily patterned rooms, cottagecore interiors are about embracing timeworn charm and personal style. When you can’t put up walls or hang sliding doors, a two-sided bookcase is a creative— and sculptural—way to visually divide a room and create separate zones (for eating, sleeping, studying).

Overlap the Art

The siding is painted in Rookwood Jade and the porch flooring is in Renwick Olive, both by Sherwin-Williams, to reflect the natural landscape. From traditional to modern, these exterior paint color schemes will instantly boost your home's curb appeal. If you find yourself deep down an Instagram rabbit-hole at 2 a.m. Checking out the casually cluttered, beautifully collected interiors of the British countryside, then you've likely stumbled across the cottagecore aesthetic.

Bedroom Niche Studio Apartment

Start stocking up on pieces you love and build out your collection over time. Lighting can change the way a room looks and feels, so don’t take your fixtures for granted. Take a good, hard look at your bedroom’s lighting set-up, and consider whether it could be improved.

White With Black Accents

In the dressing area of Stacey Hill’s chic Texan retreat, flea market finds are repurposed to cover up function with beauty. A vintage Chinese-style folding screen became a pair of cabinet doors and dressers placed back-to-back form a dressing table. Cork is all the rage as of late, and it’s not hard to see why. The material is multiuse and adds just the proper texture and dimension in the right room. It’s perfect for damp environs like Miami (where this cork-covered bedroom by Charlap Hyman and Herrero lives). Your living room is a place built for leisure time, from bonding with family to entertaining friends to relaxing and recharging on your own.

Hang a Wall Clock

Parachute bedding and a Tala table lamp encompass that relaxing theme. Both Minted and Etsy have extensive collections of grown-up, sophisticated removable wall art. The adhesive murals have a luxurious matte finish and come in a variety of styles. Removable wall art is perfect if you're renting and don't want to damage the walls.

It’s about making your space feel more liveable, and that requires a balance of form and function. Putting your prettiest pots on display is a great way to keep them at the ready—and to make your kitchen look more stylish, too. Many of us think to paint our kitchen cabinets, but your kitchen island could use a makeover too. Give your island a little attention and cover it in a vibrant coat of paint. Whether for the holidays or just because, DIY a hoop garland you can hang your favorite photos on.

A rug is a great way to cozy up any space, and if you spring for a bold or vibrant option, it can also be a great way to dress up any space. If your living room is in need of a little color, bring a striking rug into the mix. Make your home’s first impression a good one by dressing up your entryway.

Design a Meditation Corner

In the kitchen of their Ojai ranch, Eric Hughes and Nathan Turner use it to splendid effect. You can always swap the paint for printed tiles if you want to do something really statement-making.

It's the perfect excuse to invest in a new vase for your bedroom or bathroom. In this New York apartment designed by Katie Ridder, a globe-shaped vase adds a nice bubble detail. If the upkeep is too much, go for a low-maintenance plant instead. Bold, moody, and versatile, charcoal black will never go out of style.

Wrap pieces of satin ribbon around a wreath frame until they cover the surface. Incorporate three colors of ribbon—purple, lavender and white–and hang the chandelier above your dining room table. Industrial vintage lamps add character to your walls and unique lighting to your space. Wrap jute around the lamp’s cord to foster a chic, artsy look. “The acoustics are wonderful,” Moschino chimes in mischievously. “You’re sitting here and Philip is over there, and you say, ‘Yes, Philip, I know what you just said.’” Laughing, he adds, “It’s wonderful though, and because of the mirrors, you don’t feel excluded.

The simple addition of gold paint on the structure of the shelving is a fantastic idea for anyone considering enlivening details for their neutral room ideas. When Ciaran McGuigan, creative director of the Irish furniture brand Orior, moved into his Brooklyn loft, he started with a mostly muted palette. Life was brought into each space with pops of bold color, including bold red hardware. This Patrick Mele–designed Aspen manse is called Happy Hill—and for good reason. What is more joyful than a colorful pair of bookcases bursting with well-worn tomes? A mismatched medley of reading material is all any room needs to feel truly lived in.

By building a banquette, you can craft a dining nook that feels veritably restaurant-worthy—without breaking the bank. Bath mats offer an obvious way to cozy up your bathroom, but if your bathroom is pretty big, you might want to throw a rug in there too. Mantels are an obvious place to store décor, and mirrors are a classic thing to place there. It can be hard to find a mirror that’s wide enough to suit your mantel.

If you have a Spanish Mediterranean Revival home, revive the exterior with a shade of yellow that’s reminiscent of a sunrise. Paint any ornate details white to spotlight those special characteristics, as designer Maggie Cruz did for her Florida house. Allow your home to harmonize with the greenery that surrounds it by creating a jade and olive color scheme, as HGTV stars Ben and Erin Napier did for this Laurel, Mississippi, home.

The Clinton family's five generations[18] as California restaurateurs began when David Harrison Clinton came to Los Angeles from Missouri in 1888 and purchased the Southern Hotel and its dining room in downtown Los Angeles.

Murals Are Taking Over DC-Area Restaurants

A number of effort were made to show that Clinton was a fraud and only grandstanding to promote himself and his cafeterias, but the corruption was undeniable in the long run. The Los Angeles Times endorsed Shaw, but the electorate voted to thrown him out of office and elected superior court judge Fletcher Bowron, a Clinton ally, to the mayor’s office. Both men were known as “reformers” and Bowron went to work cleaning up the system.

In 1939, the founders of Clifton's remodeled the restaurant to change it from a conventional dining establishment to a more exotic setting and renamed it "Clifton's Pacific Seas". The exterior and interior were decorated with 12 waterfalls, volcanic rock, and tropical foliage.[27] Tiki historian Sven Kirsten claims it had a "sherbert-gushing volcano". The men reconciled, and Clinton was described as the “explainer in chief” as he delivered a rousing speech calling for Obama’s reelection during the 2012 Democratic National Convention. He also partnered with Republicans, notably the late former President George H.W. Bush, on fundraising efforts to benefit survivors of an Indian Ocean tsunami that devastated Southeast Asia in 2004 and Hurricane Katrina, which killed more than 1,800 Americans in 2005.

The Clintons were to remain in the home until 1949 when he sold it to Lillian E. Schramm. After Schramm passed away in 1955, it was sold by Security Bank, the heirs of her executor, to Jorge Hoyos. The Hoyos family retained ownership until May 14, 2010 when the estate sold to the current owners. An ally to the mayor’s office, Clinton became a major political player well before his 40th birthday and remained such for years.

Clinton was instrumental in drafting a new city charter which was voted in to place in 1939. Development of Los Angeles because he was one of the most influential individuals behind the scenes in Los Angeles politics at a critical times when the city was racked by corruption at the highest levels. Ziegler, failing to show “any evidence of bias stemming from extrajudicial factors,” himself confirmed that Vera’s “appointment and past campaign contributions alone and together do not warrant disqualification,” the judge said. Nor did Ziegler succeed in arguing that the politically charged nature of the case necessarily meant Vera had to step aside. Cannon said it has been a top priority among city officials, police and fire investigators to get to the bottom of the deadly explosion that caused so much damage to nearby businesses and killed one innocent bystander.

If you are hell-bent on getting inside, you can contact the owners of the home via their website. The home of the founder of Clifton’s cafeteria, the house was designed in 1928 by the architect Arthur W. Larson for its original owner-builder. In April, Hunter Biden’s lawyers asserted that Ziegler’s recusal campaign against Vera was not unlike Trump’s campaign against Bill Clinton-appointed U.S. District Judge Donald Middlebrooks in the Trump v. Hillary Clinton RICO lawsuit. The plaintiff called the case “instructive,” as Almadani did in her ruling.

Some parts of his legacy became deeply unpopular among later generations of Democrats, such as the 1994 crime bill that increased funding for police departments and penalties for federal crimes, the “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell” policy for gay members of the military and the Defense of Marriage Act. The first president to sign a balanced budget in decades, Clinton entered office with a $255-billion budget deficit and left office with a $182-billion budget surplus. The former president has been a globetrotting celebrity and philanthropist since leaving the White House in 2001, raising millions for his family’s nonprofit Clinton Foundation and getting paid handsomely to speak. Upon landing, Clinton will head to their family home in Chappaqua, about 30 miles north of New York City.

In this series, called “The New West,” I’m exploring the reasons — economic, demographic, political — for that change. That political base has freed Democrats to compete in the battlegrounds of the Midwest and reach for states like Georgia, North Carolina and Virginia that were once well beyond the party’s grasp. Bill Clinton was busy filling Cabinet positions and shaping his economic agenda when a memo landed from a team of political advisors. Although Clinton was still more than a month away from becoming president, the topic was his reelection nearly four years off. After living in the house for 38 years, the couple donated it to the university in 1975. The Hanna-Honeycomb house is open just twice a year for public tours, at Stanford’s Heritage Services discretion.

Crime is a ballot ‘vulnerability’ for California Democrats after Schiff, Bass break-ins

David's son Edmond settled in San Francisco, where he and his wife Gertrude became co-owners of a group of cafeteria-style restaurants named Dennets. In the Trump v. Clinton case, Middlebrooks refused to recuse himself, writing that he had “never met or spoken with” the Clintons. Thereafter, Trump attorneys sought the judge’s disqualification a second time, this time claiming “politically charged language in the Court’s recent opinions and the extrajudicial factual research performed by the Court” created the “appearance of bias.” That second recusal attempt also failed. The only clubhouse designed by Frank Lloyd Wright in 1923 had remained in blueprint and concept only. Then, in 2001, Wright's idea came to life when it was constructed posthumously as the Nakoma Resort in the North Lake Tahoe region of California.

In 1915, oil heiress and socialite Aline Barnsdall approached Wright to commission a theater. As the two schemed up ways to make Barnsdall’s dreams into a reality, plans expanded to include commercial shops, an artist residence, cinema, two guesthouses, and a residence for Barnsdall—only the guesthouses and main residence were ever built. She requested that the hollyhock, her favorite flower, be incorporated into the design of the house. Today, visitors can find the flower (which can be easily spotted by its notched petals) in the home’s textiles, furniture, decorative glass, and stonework.

He also reported from the White House and Capitol Hill during the George H.W. Bush and Clinton administrations. Kantor became the national chairman of Clinton’s campaign and was among those seeing political opportunity in the state, despite its history of favoring Republicans. In 1988, Bush — Reagan’s vice president — defeated Democrat Michael Dukakis, by a less-than-overwhelming 51% to 48%. In 1992, Arkansas’ five-term governor became the first Democratic presidential candidate in nearly three decades to carry California, the political birthplace of Richard M. Nixon and Ronald Reagan. Few, if any, considered Clinton’s victory in California the start of a political realignment; he won just 46% of the vote. The Ennis House is privately owned (it was last sold in 2019 to cannabis entrepreneurs Robert Rosenheck and Cindy Capobianco for $18 million) and is currently not open to the public for visits.

Clinton, a former Arkansas governor, was known as the first baby boomer president and served two terms in the White House from 1993 to 2001. Clinton was diagnosed with a urological infection that turned into a blood infection, aides said. Though some media outlets said Clinton had sepsis — a life-threatening response by the body to an infection that can result in tissue damage and organ failure — aides said the former president was never in septic shock, the most severe and deadly stage of sepsis.

Head to one or all of his designs dotted throughout California from northern California to Los Angeles and lesser-known properties like shopping centers and medical clinics. Deeply reported insights into legislation, politics and policy from Sacramento, Washington and beyond. In all, Clinton visited California 56 times from 1993, the year he assumed the presidency, through 2001, the year he left the White House, according to a tally kept by his presidential library. That is far more than any other state, save Maryland, home to the presidential retreat at Camp David, and New York, where Clinton settled after leaving Washington. Before Clinton, the last Democratic presidential candidate to carry the state was Lyndon Johnson, who won California as part of his 1964 landslide. At the time, Clinton was a gregarious 18-year-old college student who collected friends the way others gather wildflowers.

On Tuesday, while visiting longtime friends in Orange County, the former president felt fatigued and was admitted to the intensive care unit at UC Irvine Medical Center that evening. Clinton walked out of the hospital with his wife shortly after 8 a.m., shook hands with Amin and flashed a thumbs up at photographers gathered there. At the time, Clinton wrote in his autobiography, Southern California constituted the world’s sixth-largest economy. So helping resuscitate the region was vital to the nation’s overall recovery. Once solidly Republican, the West has become political bedrock for Democrats.

He developed the George D. Sturges House in Brentwood in 1939, the only true example of a Usonian-style house in southern California. Pearce House built in 1950 in the San Gabriel Mountains just outside LA has a Usonian feel to it. From Taliesin West, Wright's winter home, Wright developed another style, desert rubble construction. Desert rubble construction uses rough stones and concrete that are shaped with a wooden form. Just outside LA, in Malibu, Wright created the Arch Oboler Gatehouse (1940), utilizing this style. If you are a fan of architect Frank Lloyd Wright or of great architecture in general, his California creations can be the focus of some great day trips.
