How do I start Montessori homeschooling?
One of my top goals for my kids is to impart a LOVE of learning and to teach them HOW to learn – how to get the information they need and don’t have. Determine your tolerance for limited free time before signing up to homeschool. Complaining about it at home will negatively affect your kids and your family as a whole. For context, I do not have family living nearby, and a pretty weak support system otherwise. I’d rather not spend babysitting money, so I can get free time. Join forums and Facebook groups with like-minded homeschoolers who boost each other as you learn and grow together.

I caution you to instead keep the letter polite and short. There's no sense in letting a copy of it make it to social media and causing all sorts of drama. Trust me, it won't do any good and may cause some well-meaning people grief.

Once you’ve decided to homeschool, make sure you withdraw your child from any school districts they are currently enrolled in to avoid truancy charges. While there are some families that simply can’t make it work for a multitude of reasons, more parents than you’d think could educate their kids at home with the right tools, tips, and resources. Home school students are required to complete a minimum of 24 hours of college-level coursework before they are eligible for graduation. All states in the U.S. legally allow homeschooling, however, there are state laws and requirements which vary from state to state. As a second generation homeschool family in Texas, my experience may be very different from homeschool families in other parts of the U.S.
Above all, remember you truly can’t “do it all.” On any given day, something will be overlooked. Be purposeful in your big-picture goals, and remember that homeschool balance occurs over the long-haul. We don’t have to keep the grades separated with their individual textbooks. Instead, we have the flexibility to customize a multi-grade experience. You’re allowed to have rough days, and your child is, too. Instead, learning at home has its basis in relationship and connection.
Homeschooling while working takes creativity and juggling, but you can still homeschool with multiple grade levels. Remember, it’s always a good idea to outsource or find a curriculum that is easy on the parents. Ome local districts may request more information from homeschooling families than their state requires. Being aware of your rights and your state homeschooling laws can keep you from extra effort. Finally, your state may require homeschooling parents to have a high school diploma or college degree, so make sure to be familiar with all of your state homeschooling regulations. With time, you will figure out your children’s learning styles, what homeschool style resonates with you, and what rhythms work best for your family as a whole.
